Suggestions for names - Hear me out!

Suggestions for names:

1. We name it Beard.

2.Something sneaky we might consider is naming the magazine three words of the acronym, ART.

  • Option 2a:The magazine would be printed with the full, three-word name and, perhaps eventually, be referred to as ART or ART magazine by peeps. This, however, would avoid copyright issues (I think Artnet owns the name) and still allow us the pretense we are so apt at demonstrating.
  • Option 2b:Expanding on 2a, the name of the magazine changes each publication, but the acronym ART is still suggested.
e.g., After Rauchenberg Times, Almanac of the Rumor Trust, Atlas Read Tolstoy, Anti-RationaliT, Ache Retake Toothache, Amnesiac RickRack TickTack, Ao Row Tao, ASAP Rap Trap, Acts Racks Tax, ad infinitum.
  • Option 2bi:The name given to each publication could then describe the theme of the new publication, if not, simply draw attention to an article or admit to the miscellany of the content.
  • Option 2bii:Building on 2bi, the name of each new issue would announce the theme of the next issue. It would, in effect, be a calling for article submissions.
e.g., American Realist Traditions, Academics Rentals Technique, Auctions Restorations Triennials, Amateur Review Travel, Ahistoric Railway Transit, Albers Rausch Thibault, Acconci Rembold Takahashi, Atheism Russia Tchaikovsky, Antoines Rebeccas Tsangs, Age Race Time, Anos Rouge Tempeste, Archeology Rusto TAKI 183,

Suddenly, I feel like this posting is my submission for the first publication...hmm

3. Artra or Arttra. A palindrome. Incidentally, Okwui loves a good palindrome. Seriously, he and Hanru really had a knee-slapper in the McBean offices over Hannah's name when she was incoming Diego director.

3. Since this magazine is currently being referred to as ArtMag, we could just embrace the generality of this and go one step further to put it in some sort of word play.
  • 3a. Gamtra (backwards)
  • 3b. Bowtja (upsidedown...although, you can't tell in this font) Bowtie, for that matter.
  • 3c. am (acronym, but also the hours when much of our greatest works are done) Also, Am is the symbol for Americium, "an actinide that was obtained in 1944 by bombarding plutonium with neutrons and was the fourth transuranic element to be discovered." -guess where.
  • 3etc.

4. "3etc." Does anyone else like the name, 3etc.? Or, x^etc? x to the etc. degree? I digress.

5. Alpha Romeo Tango. Wow. That says it all. That is the NATO phonetic alphabet. Able Roger Tare (RAF 1943-1956), Apple Roger/Robert Tommy (RAF 1942-1943), Ace Robert Toc (RAF 1924-1942). Guys, I really like the criteria of these names which is all but randomized and a manifold reference to changeable systems of communication.

6. Italicize our name as a challenge to our own resumes, since the way to italicize an italicized word is to unitalicized it.

7. We name it Beard...did I already mention this one?

Whatever we do, we need to make sure that we don't get bogged down with words. We need to submit articles with enriching content that is answerable to the name. We don't want to end up like the folks over at Artcyclopedia; the poor souls bit off more than they could chew. As Ama would say in the passive condescension of a true Southern Belle, bless their hearts.

Submission file name

Okay guys
The submission deadline is fast approaching and I promised to post this information.
When submitting file to the email account (artmag.ed@google.com) please save your file Firstname_Lastname.doc
If your article or whatever is titled, simply put that as a header in the word doc.
Don't worry about formatting, font or things like that.
Please also include all pertinent information such as show title, date, artists, location etc
That's it! Simple.

To start with

Hello everyone!

I look forward to working on this continuing project. I figured since there haven't been any posts yet about the first issue, I'd start it off. I'm going to write a review about the Trevor Paglen show: "The Other Night Sky" currently up at the Berkeley Art Museum.

Minutes from initial meeting

MINUTES FROM MEETING 5/29/08

PRESENT: HAARA, JONES, ECHEVERRIA, HARRINGTON, BURNS, KELLER, BARCLIFT, ELKUS, TORGERSEN

art mag has an email account: artmag.ed@gmail.com
this account has a public calendar for deadlines
word docs will be submitted as email attachments
we can also post our plans for articles so that we don't have redundant content.

two or three volunteers needed to edit- falzone expressed interest, as did burns

anticipating first issue ready august 1. submissions would be due no later than mid-july.
as for images, jpegs in the largest format possible. perhaps an ftp service could be used for higher-quality images.

plan to publish through lulu.

we could possibly set up a website, but it would be just as much work as the magazine itself.

name still to be determined. should it be arbitrary?

there is interest (voiced by echeverria) in having a strong critical theory component

reviews do not necessarily have to be of shows, can expand to cover other topics (buildings, airports, film festivals, etc.)

should issues have themes? will themes emerge naturally?

harrington stresses that it shouldn't have an agenda per se, but instead just be a lit mag about art by artists with content determined by what artists do and what they go to see.

torgersen wanted to know why we dont just publish the content as a blog
-keller says a magazine carries more weight/respect

editing process should keep the level of content as high as possible.

what about imagery not accompanied by articles? too close to self-promotion? (barclift)
harrington wants images to be used for purposes of commentary and critique/photo essay

how frequently do we want to publish? the less frequently we publish the more content the editors will have to choose from. also, individual issues could be larger if publishing was more infrequent.

what about rejecting articles? how will that process work? will it be that articles' publishing are delayed if they need more work?

also, editorial deadlines could be set before final deadlines so that articles could be reworked in time for publication.

editors should keep in mind temporal relevance of content when considering articles.

design concerns: size of pages, etc. harrington plans to use this as a way to build his design portfolio.

DEADLINES:

should we have first drafts due, then time for rewriting, then another deadline, then another, final deadline? should there be a core editorial group (those present at this meeting)?
we also need a deadline for design/layout beyond the editorial work.

TIMEFRAME:

JULY 1: FIRST DRAFTS
JULY 14: RESUBMITTED DRAFT DEADLINE
JULY 21: EDITORIAL DEADLINE
AUGUST 1: PUBLISHED.

torgersen raises the point that we should try to incorporate this project into our busy lives from the get go and try to get an issue out ASAP.

also, we should have secret santas as well as secret handshakes.
